Scholarships for Service AmeriCorps Program:

Scholarships for Service: Student Civic Fellows (SFS) offers undergraduate and graduate students, enrolled in colleges and universities across Rhode Island, the opportunity to serve as AmeriCorps volunteers and volunteer recruiters.   SFS members support the work of non-profit agencies and PK-12 schools through a 300-hour term of service completed during one academic year.  RI's SFS members will recruit over 1000 volunteers annually and receive a $1,132 educational award at the close of their term.

SFS AmeriCorps Members:

  • Work with a group of students within your own campus to actively participate in strengthening your community.
  • Commit to 300 hours of service and the recruitment of ten (10) volunteers throughout one calendar year.
  • Be a part of an active statewide initiative with other college students in service to local communities.
  • Provide essential assistance to non-profit agencies with a 501(c) 3 status who are serving communities in need.

NEW!
SFS: Student Veterans 2011-2012

Student Veterans and family members using the GI Bill are encouraged to apply for a unique community-based AmeriCorps volunteer program providing essential assistance to non-profit agencies that are serving communities. Application and more information can be found HERE. Contact Micaela Black (micaela.black@va.gov), Kristin Read (kread@risd.edu), or Miranda O'Hayer (mohayer@risd.edu) for additional program details.

Who Should Apply:

  • Students who want to be part of helping RI’s non-profits, challenged by an increased need for services due to the economic downturn.
  • Students who are eager to serve at an agency or in a profession that interests them. This is a great way to get your foot in the door and build contacts and references!
  • Students who will work as an unpaid intern at a non-profit this academic year.
  • Students who have unspent federal work study dollars and are approved to work in one of the financial aid offices off campus work locations.
  • Students who are fully enrolled rising freshman and want to build a network on campus and in the community prior to the start of classes this fall.

How to Get Involved:

Contact your Community Service Office on your college campus.  Find your contact here.  All prospective SFS members must attend an Orientation hosted by their college or university.
